Working with a small urban site close to Mount Maunganui’s thriving main beach, the brief called for an architectural style celebrating discerning ease, comfort and modernist characteristics supported by Scandinavian mid-century design.
We mitigated challenges surrounding site bulk, location compliances, a limited 370sqm rear suite area and a specific request to achieve four-bay garaging by focusing our design on uncomplicated building detailing and awareness of the building’s durability performance.
The vision? Clean aesthetics and elegant simplicity. The result? A home conceived with simple materials used to enhance various exterior proportions including vertical shiplap cedar with bevelled recess, vertical metal profile wall claddings and brilliantly textured staggered painted brickwork. The north facing lower free form living provides incredible solar orientation, coupled with dramatic double height living creating cohesion with upper level living spaces.
Surpassing all expectations, this design took out a Highly Commended placing in the 2014 ADNZ Resene Design Awards.

“We were looking for a designer who had flair and skill, but also the ability to meet our meticulous expectations. A designer who would provide sound advice and be honest and real about our project. Someone who would work as a team with our builder, and would take a genuine interest in our vision, not overriding it with their own.
“Jason is all of those qualities and more. He’s hands on and involved, and the detail within his plans ensured the build process ran smoothly. Jason took the time to make small yet important changes until we felt we had the concept just right, accommodating our needs at a time when facilitating various contractors can be stressful in order to get a job done on time. We’d build with him again in a heartbeat as we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
